Minnesota Vikings

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Vikings a B.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Vikings took Brandon Thomas at the 230th overall pick, roughly 96 spots before his name belonged. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Johnson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 16
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 43
Byron Murphy II in the 42nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 40
They read the board right and T.J. Tampa was the payoff at pick 48. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 102
No edge and no loss on Michael Pratt in the 96th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Max Melton · CB · rank 111
No drama and no debate, Max Melton went about where he belonged in pick No. 108. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 180
A wild overpay on Javon Baker in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 139
Malik Mustapha at pick No. 148 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 150
A tidy bit of business in No. 160, where Theo Johnson graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 167
A straight-up fair deal on Layden Robinson at the 166th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Andrew Raym · C · rank 194
They went early on Andrew Raym in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Brandon Thomas · RB · rank 326
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brandon Thomas. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
