After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Arnold.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 20 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Terrion Arnold in slot 42 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid a round early for Darius Robinson in the 108th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on MarShawn Lloyd in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Justin Rogers in the 148th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Layden Robinson at pick No. 160 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Javon Baker at pick 166 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy bit of business in Round 6, Pick 4, where Andru Phillips graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A reach on Matthew Jones in slot 230; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
