Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings found their guy under center in McCarthy: B.

The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. No fireworks, but a solid B.

Reaching for Logue left real value on the table behind him. Newton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 44
In No. 11 they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 12
The board fumbled Jer'Zhan Newton all the way to the 48th pick, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 77
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Christian Haynes in the 96th overall pick, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
Khyree Jackson at pick No. 108 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · James Williams · S · rank 134
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in pick 131. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Austin Booker · DL-EDGE · rank 159
Austin Booker at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.19 · Pick 155 · Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint · WR · rank 147
A quiet steal in slot 155: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 149
Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 24 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 158
Jaylen Wright slipping to pick No. 168 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Dallin Holker · TE · rank 145
Dallin Holker in No. 179 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Zion Logue · DL · rank 250
They reached a country mile for Zion Logue at the 209th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.36 · Pick 211 · David Ugwoegbu · OLB-EDGE · rank 233
They left a pile of value on the table to take David Ugwoegbu this early at pick 211. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Myles Jones · CB · rank 214
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Myles Jones at Round 7, Pick 10. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
