The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on cornerback with safety and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 44
In pick 11 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Edgerrin Cooper
· LB
· rank 58
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Edgerrin Cooper at No. 68 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 105
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in the 103rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.8
· Pick 108
· Max Melton
· CB
· rank 111
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Max Melton in the 108th pick leaves safety and interior defensive lineman for later.
R4.29
· Pick 129
· Javion Cohen
· OG
· rank 149
Javion Cohen in Round 4, Pick 29 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.19
· Pick 155
· LaDarius Henderson
· OT
· rank 163
They liked LaDarius Henderson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 155. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.24
· Pick 160
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 155
Nothing to complain about; Braelon Allen went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.25
· Pick 161
· Austin Booker
· DL-EDGE
· rank 159
Austin Booker in slot 161 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· Edefuan Ulofoshio
· LB
· rank 156
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 168th pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.4
· Pick 179
· Javon Baker
· WR
· rank 180
No drama and no debate, Javon Baker went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.34
· Pick 209
· Erick All
· TE
· rank 215
A straight-up fair deal on Erick All at Round 6, Pick 34, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
R6.36
· Pick 211
· Trevor Keegan
· OG
· rank 234
They reached into another round for Trevor Keegan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.10
· Pick 230
· Jeremy Flax
· OT
· rank 235
They paid sticker price for Jeremy Flax in pick No. 230, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
