The Andrew Raym selection is the head-turner. The Vikings reached 72 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
The Vikings indulged a want in Carson while a need in safety, wide receiver and other spots stayed open.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
A surprising call. With safety, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent slot 108 on Caelen Carson, a cornerback they were not short of.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Jones at pick 129, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Myles Cole in the 157th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
