The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Every board in the league had Ali lower, and that gap is the story.
However the rest shakes out, Rice at that price is a win they earned. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, tight end and other spots still on the board.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 8: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while safety, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
They robbed the room for Brenden Rice here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They jumped the gun on Kamal Hadden, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They did well to land Dwight McGlothern in No. 167, just ahead of his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A big swing on Myles Cole at the 177th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Rasheen Ali. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Keaton Bills at No. 232 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
