You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Vikings did exactly that with Andrew Raym in Round 6, Pick 2. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Jones pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Brandon Dorlus at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They jumped the gun on Trevor Keegan, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Kamal Hadden at the 157th pick, and it noticed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They talked themselves into Myles Cole at the 167th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Andrew Raym in Round 6, Pick 2, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Trente Jones in pick No. 230, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Rasheen Ali at Round 7, Pick 12 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
