The Jets did not so much draft Drew Allar as overpay for him, 54 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Jordyn Tyson at pick 16 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Brandon Cisse in slot 33, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Derrick Moore in the Round 2 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Drew Allar at the 103rd pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zane Durant this early at pick No. 140. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Keagen Trost in slot 179 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Nwankpa in pick No. 228 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Nolan Rucci a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
