You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Lions did exactly that with Jack Kelly in the 181st overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
However the rest shakes out, Klubnik at that price is a win they earned. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Dani Dennis-Sutton at the 50th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chris McClellan at No. 118 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Jalen Farmer at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
TJ Hall in pick 157 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jack Kelly at the 181st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Cade Klubnik was still sitting there in No. 205, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. The roster fit checks out.
Kendrick Law at pick 213 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Le'Veon Moss in Round 7, Pick 6, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
