The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Legette steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Amarius Mims at the Round 1 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in No. 34. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They read the board right and Tyler Guyton was the payoff at pick No. 57. The roster fit checks out.
Value with a capital V on Xavier Worthy in slot 59, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Xavier Legette in the 68th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
The board had cheaper options than Darius Robinson at Round 4, Pick 11, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in No. 136: Kris Abrams-Draine for less than the market said. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Omar Speights in pick 229, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Ryan Watts at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
