They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Lassiter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
A tidy little value on Tyler Guyton in the 36th overall pick, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Xavier Legette in pick 42. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Kamari Lassiter in Round 3, Pick 3 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 78 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Theo Johnson at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mason McCormick at slot 139 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A conviction pick on Xavier Thomas at pick No. 152 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Andrew Raym. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
