The phones were a trap the Colts kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting Gulbin proves the room right and everyone else wrong. However the rest shakes out, Durant at that price is a win they earned.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Jacob Rodriguez at the 54th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They went early on Kyle Louis in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Jalon Kilgore in slot 106; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 137, where Trey Zuhn III graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Matt Gulbin at No. 169 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Zane Durant in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Jeff Caldwell is a better player than No. 210 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach on Latrell McCutchin Sr. in pick 222; the board had better options right there. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
