The war room fell hard for Will Sheppard, and it showed at the 211th overall pick: 142 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
So much rides on Cam Ward that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 14 they get a featured back at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Marcus Mbow at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Deone Walker at the 67th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for O'Donnell Fortune in the 116th pick, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at pick 150 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Jake Majors in slot 170 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Cobee Bryant, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Will Sheppard in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
