The Joe Milton III pick is the one that will follow the Chargers into the fall. They took him 60 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.
Getting Johnson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Chargers indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Malik Nabers at pick No. 12. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, T.J. Tampa in pick 69, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Blake Corum, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Devontez Walker in Round 4, Pick 5 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Joe Milton III at the 140th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Elijah Jones at No. 144 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 225 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cornelius Johnson in Round 7, Pick 33 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
