Nobody else had Matthew Sluka anywhere near pick No. 254. The Colts did, by 168 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
However the rest shakes out, Trotter at that price is a win they earned. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Colts indulged a want in Kilgore while a need in tight end stayed open.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They barely believed it either: Josiah Trotter still on the board at the 89th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malik Muhammad in pick 113. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Jalon Kilgore, a cornerback that was not the priority.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zane Durant well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Febechi Nwaiwu in the 182nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kendrick Law at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Patrick Payton at the 193rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Aiden Fisher. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Thaddeus Dixon in No. 209, more than the board wanted. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dane Key this early at pick 214. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Wesley Williams at Round 7, Pick 23, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Armoni Goodwin at the 249th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Matthew Sluka in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
