Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings let Slaughter fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

The real work happened on the phones. The Vikings fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

The Slaughter steal is the beam this whole class leans on. With edge rusher, safety and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · Jermod McCoy · CB · rank 18
In pick No. 20 they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 48
No edge and no loss on Lee Hunter in No. 49; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Jake Slaughter · C · rank 55
Jake Slaughter in the 82nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.28 · Pick 92 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 72
Jacob Rodriguez at slot 92 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Bryce Lance · WR · rank 90
They did well to land Bryce Lance in pick 97, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Treydan Stukes · CB · rank 96
A surprising call. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still to address, they spent the 112th overall pick on Treydan Stukes, a cornerback they were not short of.
R5.23 · Pick 163 · Tanner Koziol · TE · rank 164
Tanner Koziol in pick No. 163 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
R6.15 · Pick 196 · Cole Payton · QB · rank 198
They took Cole Payton at par in No. 196, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.18 · Pick 234 · TJ Hall · CB · rank 222
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and TJ Hall at the Round 7 slot is the proof. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.19 · Pick 235 · Eli Heidenreich · WR · rank 242
Eli Heidenreich in slot 235 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.28 · Pick 244 · Kaden Wetjen · WR · rank 223
Circle this one: Kaden Wetjen at the 244th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
