They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The cost of the Baker reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Roman Wilson at par in pick 47, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Patrick Paul at the 68th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Javon Baker in Round 3, Pick 6 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Braelon Allen in No. 103 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Khyree Jackson was still sitting there in slot 137, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Tykee Smith at the 180th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 193 for years; that is how good the value is. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Brevyn Spann-Ford in No. 231 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
