The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Elijah Jones slide 53 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Michael Wilson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for Ruke Orhorhoro at slot 58 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Max Melton at the 88th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Christian Mahogany at pick 91 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Roger Rosengarten in the 126th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Circle this one: Elijah Jones at Round 5, Pick 33 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Drake Nugent, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Jaylan Ford is a better player than the 219th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nice patience on Dominique Hampton, who had no business lasting to Round 7, Pick 25. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyrice Knight. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
