New England Patriots

Conviction outran the board for the Patriots, and it cost them: F.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Fred Davis at the Round 7 slot is 150 spots clear of where he belonged. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Terence Steele pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Mason Graham · DT · rank 8
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.11 · Pick 11 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 24
In the 11th pick they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Clay Webb · OG · rank 73
A straight-up fair deal on Clay Webb at pick No. 68, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 89
A premium they did not need to pay, Darien Porter a notch or two before his time. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · David Walker · LB-EDGE · rank 191
David Walker at pick 83 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Gunnar Helm · TE · rank 189
A big swing on Gunnar Helm at Round 4, Pick 4, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.4 · Pick 142 · Kyle McCord · QB · rank 222
Kyle McCord in Round 5, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 200
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wilson in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.6 · Pick 220 · Elijhah Badger · WR · rank 265
Elijhah Badger at No. 220 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.10 · Pick 224 · Tony Grimes · CB · rank 260
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tony Grimes this early at the 224th pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.27 · Pick 241 · Fred Davis · CB · rank 391
They talked themselves into Fred Davis at pick No. 241, and the board did not agree. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
