After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Newton. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 30; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cooper Beebe at the 46th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Edgerrin Cooper higher than the 62nd pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid up for Tyler Davis at No. 108 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Matt Goncalves at pick 129. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Cedric Gray still on the board at slot 157. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They robbed the room for Josh Newton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kitan Oladapo at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Garret Greenfield worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
