Some picks age like wine; Mycah Pittman at pick No. 256 will need to, sitting 120 spots clear of his grade. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Kris Jenkins in the 37th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Roman Wilson at Round 3, Pick 5 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mike Sainristil in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Bucky Irving in No. 81; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Drake Nugent, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into LaDarius Henderson at pick 139, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take AJ Barner this early at pick No. 183. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on J.J. Weaver at No. 223, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Mycah Pittman in Round 7, Pick 36 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
