When a board-topper like Cornelius Johnson slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Chargers did not. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. The roster fit checks out.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 43rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kris Jenkins in pick No. 45 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in the 106th pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Jamari Thrash come to them and pounced at pick 139. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Jefferson went about where he belonged in No. 183. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They read the board right and Jase McClellan was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 26. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at the 223rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Daijahn Anthony higher than pick 256, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
