The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Put together, it is a D.
The cost of the Bell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
That Jones pick is the receipt they will wave around later. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 16 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Amarius Mims at the 37th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy bit of business in pick 69, where Xavier Worthy graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Blake Corum in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Kris Abrams-Draine at the 79th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Javon Baker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Mahogany at the 90th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
DeWayne Carter at Round 4, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaheim Bell this early at No. 139. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Cornelius Johnson in pick 180, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Elijah Jones all the way to slot 225, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Jordan Magee come to them and pounced at the 253rd pick. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
