There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chargers took J.J. Weaver a full 64 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Milton III at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 11 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
In the 23rd pick they get a load in the middle. The biggest hole, addressed.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Payton Wilson this early at pick 37. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached into another round for MarShawn Lloyd, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Brenden Rice in the 69th overall pick, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for AJ Barner. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 140 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cornelius Johnson in Round 6, Pick 6 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Joe Milton III all the way to pick No. 225, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for J.J. Weaver at the 253rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
