You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Cornelius Johnson in No. 256.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 37 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for Sedrick Van Pran at the 69th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Luke McCaffrey at pick 106 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Frank Gore Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: AJ Barner in slot 183, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Josh Wallace at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Cornelius Johnson in slot 256 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
