There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chargers started one anyway for Drake Nugent, 43 picks ahead of schedule. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Quinyon Mitchell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Roman Wilson in the 69th overall pick; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Drake Nugent well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Gore Jr. in No. 142 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Michael Barrett in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for J.J. Weaver in the 226th pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
