The Chargers spent real capital to be 55 picks early on J.J. Weaver, and the board is going to hold them to it. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Laiatu Latu at par in the 8th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Roman Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had cheaper options than Sedrick Van Pran at pick 69, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
Audric Estime at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Renardo Green. A minor itch, scratched.
A big swing on AJ Barner at No. 139, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Sione Vaki at the 142nd pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A wild overpay on Gabe Hall in the 183rd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nothing to complain about; Michael Barrett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, J.J. Weaver in pick No. 256 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
