The Chargers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. fell into Round 3, Pick 5.

The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first.

The trade work was a quiet net positive. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
