You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chargers took Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 4 slot, roughly 22 spots before his name belonged.
With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Olumuyiwa Fashanu at par in pick No. 8, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Cooper DeJean in No. 40 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent slot 72 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
A big swing on Smael Mondon Jr. at the 108th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached into another round for Malachi Moore, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at Round 6, Pick 11 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Isaiah Williams in the 229th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
