The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Put together, it is a D+.
They will need Johnson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jordan Morgan in pick No. 37 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good price on Max Melton in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 9 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Trey Benson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 85th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
They did well to land Leonard Taylor III in the 106th pick, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Theo Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, James Williams in No. 139, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
They went early on Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 223rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Trevin Wallace in pick 256 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
