The Cowboys did not so much draft Donovan Smith as overpay for him, 71 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.

That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, Henderson makes the weekend a net positive.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Shedeur Sanders · QB · rank 4
In the 4th pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.12 · Pick 12 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 2
In slot 12 they get a featured back, outstanding value to boot.
R1.14 · Pick 14 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 7
They did well to land Abdul Carter in No. 14, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 22
Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 16
Steal is underselling it; Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 38 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 44
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in pick 62, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 63
Good price on Alfred Collins in No. 67, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 87
Danny Stutsman at slot 76 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 70
Deone Walker slipping to pick No. 83 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
R3.27 · Pick 91 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 62
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach pick 91 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Ajani Cornelius · OT · rank 107
They paid up for Ajani Cornelius at the 94th pick when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.1 · Pick 102 · Daylen Everette · CB · rank 119
Daylen Everette at the 102nd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 97
Fair-plus on Nicholas Singleton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.10 · Pick 111 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 83
Barrett Carter in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.11 · Pick 112 · Luke Kandra · OG · rank 109
Luke Kandra at Round 4, Pick 11 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.11 · Pick 148 · Donovan Smith · QB · rank 219
They reached into another round for Donovan Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
