It is the swing that defines the weekend: Michael Barrett in No. 110, a good 108 spots before the room expected him. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kris Jenkins at Round 2, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Blake Corum in the 69th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Drake Nugent in the Round 4 slot, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, AJ Barner in pick 109 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Michael Barrett well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for LaDarius Henderson. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Jaylen Harrell in pick No. 183 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Josh Wallace at Round 6, Pick 24 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
