Dallas Cowboys

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jaylan Ford at pick 146, roughly 39 spots before his name belonged. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

The Pritchett value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 21
Good price on Amarius Mims in slot 24, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 45
They paid up for Byron Murphy II at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 58
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 68
A reach on Zach Frazier in the 56th overall pick; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 73
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in pick 67, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 74
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 82
Cooper Beebe in pick 75 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 97
A premium they did not need to pay, Bucky Irving a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 87
Mike Sainristil at No. 89 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 102
By-the-book stuff, Tykee Smith at pick No. 100 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 134
Tommy Eichenberg in the 102nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 135
They paid a round early for Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 24, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 127
They took Kris Abrams-Draine at par in the 127th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Edefuan Ulofoshio · LB · rank 159
A real head-scratcher, Edefuan Ulofoshio in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.7 · Pick 143 · Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint · WR · rank 150
No edge and no loss on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 143rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 185
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 147
Nehemiah Pritchett at pick 174 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 170
A quiet steal in No. 186: Kitan Oladapo for less than the market said. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 199
Josh Proctor in pick No. 188 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 233
They reached a country mile for Jase McClellan at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 223
No drama and no debate, Omar Speights went about where he belonged in slot 225. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 280
Dwight McGlothern at the 245th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
