There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Matt Gulbin a full 29 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. Landing Thomas that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a blindside protector, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They liked Malachi Lawrence enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 58. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Trey Zuhn III at par in pick 125, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Mikail Kamara at slot 127, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
CJ Daniels in pick No. 133 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Chris McClellan went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Matt Gulbin at Round 5, Pick 14 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Ephesians Prysock all the way to the 211th pick, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Zavion Thomas in No. 247, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
