Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They are betting Suamataia proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Laumea value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 34 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Adonai Mitchell at pick No. 37 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cam Hart at No. 103 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach on Luke McCaffrey in pick 137; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylin Simpson at the 166th pick. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 6, Pick 8 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Grayson Murphy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Carson Steele at the 231st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
