The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Vikings watched D.J. James slide 44 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. If Milton III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
Jared Verse in the 42nd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
D.J. James in Round 4, Pick 8 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They will replay Dominick Puni at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Joe Milton III in slot 148, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in No. 160 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in pick No. 168, with Jaylen Wright worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in the 179th pick: Layden Robinson for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They did well to land Darius Muasau in pick No. 230, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
