The Bears spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jake Slaughter, the No. 55 name on the board, in pick No. 129. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the Lawson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
A.J. Haulcy at pick No. 57 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Deontae Lawson in pick 60, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nicholas Singleton in Round 3, Pick 25 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jake Slaughter at the 129th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Zavion Thomas is a better player than No. 239 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 241st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
