The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 24 spots for Christian Jones, and value like that does not grow back.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. That James pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jackson Powers-Johnson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They read the board right and D.J. James was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 16. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dominick Puni in No. 87 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
MarShawn Lloyd in pick No. 124 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Christian Jones in slot 173 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kitan Oladapo in the 174th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevor Keegan this early at No. 212. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Dwight McGlothern in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
