There is reaching, and then there is Ben Sinnott at the 90th pick. The Packers jumped the board by 39 and dared it to prove them wrong. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Gore Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Edgerrin Cooper at the 61st pick is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Max Melton in Round 3, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Mahogany at slot 74 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ben Sinnott this early at the Round 3 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They liked Cole Bishop enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 91. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They went early on Roger Rosengarten in No. 124, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Walter Rouse in the Round 4 slot, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Isaac Guerendo is a better player than pick 138 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Tanor Bortolini at the 151st overall pick, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value with a capital V on Kitan Oladapo in Round 5, Pick 26, a genuine coup. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Jordan Magee in slot 202 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board had cheaper options than Trevin Wallace at pick No. 219, and it noticed. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Austin Reed in the 245th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Frank Gore Jr. still on the board at Round 7, Pick 29. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dominique Hampton in No. 255, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
