The Drake Nugent pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 83 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with running back still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 22nd overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 24th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Edgerrin Cooper is a better player than slot 52 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Javon Bullard at pick 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Gabriel Murphy. A minor itch, scratched.
Jordan Travis in Round 3, Pick 11 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A conviction pick on Christian Mahogany at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Drake Nugent at slot 120 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at the 157th pick. The roster fit checks out.
They jumped the gun on Jordan Jefferson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 216 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They paid sticker price for KT Leveston in pick No. 233, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Solomon Byrd well ahead of where he belonged. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
