You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Nathan Pickering at the 244th overall pick, roughly 171 spots before his name belonged.
They have staked the next five years on Michael Penix Jr., which is the only story that really matters here. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Coleman pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Keon Coleman in slot 56 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Xavier Legette in pick 57, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Sedrick Van Pran in the 58th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A quiet steal in No. 73: Javon Bullard for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Cooper Beebe in the 75th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mekhi Wingo at pick 87 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Khyree Jackson at the 92nd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at slot 163. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Luke McCaffrey in No. 164 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid up for Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick No. 216 when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Andrew Raym went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Michael Barrett come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 13. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nathan Pickering. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
