The Jordan Strachan pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 114 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. The McCaffrey pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 24th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They jumped the gun on Zach Frazier, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 56 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached into another round for Mekhi Wingo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Tyler Davis at pick 87 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached a country mile for Fabien Lovett at No. 123, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Mason McCormick in slot 149, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jared Wiley in the 167th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 169, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Luke McCaffrey at pick 173 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joe Milton III this early at the Round 5 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Josh Proctor in Round 6, Pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Michael Barrett went about where he belonged in the 216th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Strachan at Round 7, Pick 13 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Value said wait; Solomon Byrd in No. 239 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Richard Jibunor at the 244th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Edefuan Ulofoshio in slot 251 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
