Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent No. 216 on Richard Jibunor, a name most had 56 spots down the list.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
Landing Greenfield that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 15 they get an island corner, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 19th pick they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 29th overall pick they get a two-high chess piece, though they paid up to get him. Need was not the driver here.
No edge and no loss on Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy little value on Payton Wilson in pick No. 56, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Sedrick Van Pran at Round 2, Pick 29, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Christian Mahogany at No. 75, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Ainias Smith in the 110th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Michael Pratt at slot 122 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 140 when waiting would have done the job. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Jared Wiley at pick 155 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dwight McGlothern slid further than he should have, and the 174th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Javontae Jean-Baptiste in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Richard Jibunor well ahead of where he belonged. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
They let Garret Greenfield come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 13. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Michael Barrett in the 244th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
