It is the swing that defines the weekend: Omar Speights in pick 245, a good 96 spots before the room expected him.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The Liufau pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 9 they get a franchise quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Maason Smith at par in pick 108, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Brenden Rice at the 129th pick for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Roger Rosengarten at Round 5, Pick 31 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in the 169th overall pick: Sione Vaki for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Marist Liufau still on the board at slot 219. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jordan Jefferson at slot 221 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Jase McClellan all the way to pick 230, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
M.J. Devonshire in pick No. 232 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Omar Speights at Round 7, Pick 25, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
