Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Wyatt Milum got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The cost of the Thornton Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
So much rides on Travis Hunter that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 20 they get a lockdown presence outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 21 they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Taking Nick Emmanwori in the 48th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Nolen in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Jalon Walker still on the board at Round 3, Pick 17. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Armand Membou at No. 83 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A running back of that caliber at the 84th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in pick 85, with Jack Bech worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaxson Dart at the 98th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Savion Williams. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cam Skattebo at slot 118. It fills a real need, too.
Alfred Collins in pick No. 120 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Dylan Fairchild in the 138th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick 139 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Jahdae Barron all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Ashton Gillotte here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid a round early for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 170th overall pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mason Taylor in pick No. 172 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Oronde Gadsden II was still sitting there in pick 174, and they pounced on premier tight end value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tyler Shough at the 190th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Shemar Turner at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Darien Porter at No. 211 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Wyatt Milum reach slot 249 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
