The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Zy Alexander, the No. 97 name on the board, in pick No. 217. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. If Jones Jr. pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an island corner at fair value.
They paid sticker price for Bradyn Swinson in Round 2, Pick 25, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fair-plus on Jalen Royals, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Kyle Kennard went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Emery Jones Jr. in the 106th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Jaylin Noel at pick 131 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at slot 144 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Cody Simon all the way to No. 163, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow Zy Alexander was still sitting there in slot 217, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Malachi Moore at pick 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Jermari Harris, who had no business lasting to the 238th overall pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jaylin Lane in Round 7, Pick 38 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
