The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Logan Brown, the No. 145 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 220 like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They are betting Thornton Jr. proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
A reach on Aireontae Ersery in pick No. 38; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Ozzy Trapilo at the 69th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaiah Bond at slot 77 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 106, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Kevin Winston Jr. all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Ajani Cornelius here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Logan Brown at the 220th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Jaydon Blue was still sitting there in pick 238, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
