The real work happened on the phones. The Cowboys fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They will need Allen to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, quarterback and other spots.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Fautanu at the 25th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 56 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots untouched.
No edge and no loss on McKinnley Jackson in slot 88; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 24 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Javon Baker at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaiah Neyor at pick 212 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Maurice Smith at the 245th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
