They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Giants' quarterback, full stop. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The McCaffrey value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The McCarthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Hit on J.J. McCarthy and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Ladd McConkey in pick No. 39 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Edgerrin Cooper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No drama and no debate, Christian Haynes went about where he belonged in pick 61. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Javon Bullard in the 70th overall pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Xavier Legette at par in No. 73, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on MarShawn Lloyd, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Marcus Harris in slot 140, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 185 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
