They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Patrick Payton, 76 picks early at the 181st pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 9, with cornerback the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on D'Angelo Ponds at the 50th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached a country mile for DeMonte Capehart at No. 118, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Harold Perkins Jr.. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Domani Jackson in the 157th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Patrick Payton at pick 181, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Bryce Foster in the 205th overall pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
John Michael Gyllenborg at pick 213 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on Miles Kitselman in No. 222, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
